Pi Mu Epsilon Journal

Problem Department

Ashley Ahlin and Harold Reiter

The Problem Department appears in each issue of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal. The editors welcome problems believed to be new and at a level appropriate for the readers of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal. Old problems displaying novel and elegant methods of solution are also invited. Proposals should be accompanied by solutions if available and by any information that will assist the editors. An asterisk (*) preceding a problem number indicates that the proposer did not submit a solution.

Beginning in 2006 the problems will be posted on this website in advance of the publication of the Journal. Problems from the last issue of the Journal are available now. On March 1, 2006, the problems to be posed in the Spring 2006 issue of the Journal will be posted. It is the plan that for future issues the problems for the next issue will be posted on our web site the day after the deadline for submission of solutions to the previous issue. We hope this will spark additional interest in these very good problems. Only the problems will be posted. The solutions and names of solvers will continue to be published only in the Journal.

All correspondence should be addressed to Harold Reiter, Department of Mathematics, University of North Carolina Charlotte, 9201 University City Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28223-0001 or sent by email to hbreiter@email.uncc.edu. Electronic submissions using LATEX are encouraged. Other electronic submissions are also encouraged. Please submit each proposal and solution preferably typed or clearly written on a separate sheet (one side only) properly identified with name, affiliation, and address. Solutions identified as by students are given preference.
