  • The J. Sutherland Frame Lecture, Friday, August 7, 8:00 p.m. – 8:50 p.m. This year's lecture will be given by Professor Persi Diaconis, Mary V. Sunseri Professor of Statistics and Mathematics, Stanford University, who will speak on

    "The Mathematics of Perfect Shuffles"

    Abstract: Magicians and gamblers can shuffle cards perfectly (demonstrations provided). Understanding what can (and cannot) be done with shuffles leads to math problems, some beyond modern mathematics.  The math is also useful for describing all sorts of computer algorithms.

What is Pi Mu Epsilon?

Pi Mu Epsilon, Inc (PME), is the National Mathematics Honor Society.

Founded on May 25, 1914 at Syracuse University, PME currently has over 300 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States.

The purpose of the Society is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among the students in academic institutions.

The Fall 2008 Pi Mu Epsilon Journal is now available.

PME mourns the loss of long-time supporters and Secretary-Treasurers, Professor Richard Good, who passed away on November 24, 2008, and Professor Robert Woodside, who passed away on December 17, 2008.
