Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in Boulder, Colorado?

Possibly one.

Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

1:

This was the inaugural year for our chapter. Our main activity was our Chapter Installation held on April 5, 2003 (in the midst of a fierce Northeast snow and ice storm). Prof. Herman Servatius from Worcester Polytech gave a fascinating talk entitled "A Leisurely Stroll Through the Museum of Many Dimensions". The richly illustrated talk dovetailed well with this year's Math Awareness Month Theme "Math and Art",but also touched on a variety of other subjects from the efficiency of engines to gene sequencing.

2:

An amazing talk on juggling patterns and the related mathematics -- with simultaneous "live" juggling throughout the talk -- was given by Prof.Greg Warrington (UMass, Amherst). It was accessible, mathematically substantial, and fun!(This was a department-sponsored talk attended by many PME members.)

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :

Five PME members presented papers at the Hudson River Undergraduate Conference held at Union College, Schenectady, NY in April 2003: Michael Duquette, Tristan Hauser, Laura McLane, Heather Rubenstein, Amanda White.

Tristan Hauser was the winner of the Mathematics Department Outstanding Senior Award. He has been awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the University of Vermont.

Sarah McGregor presented a paper at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Seattle (January '03) and another at a DPP in Orlando in November '02. She has been awarded a Teaching Fellowship in Physics at Boston University.
