5th Annual MATH Film Festival in celebration of Math Awareness Month.

Films included:

  • The Shortest Network Problem: A lecture by Ronald Graham
  • CMI millennium meeting:The Importance of Mathematics, A presentation by Fields Medallists Timothy Gowers
  • Donald in Mathmagic Land
  • Funny numbers: An evening w/ Steve Martin in conversation w/ Bob Osserman
  • Copenhagen

Math Club Book Club:
The club selected, read, and discussed these books:
Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea, Charles Seife, Matt Zimet (Illustrator)
In Code: A Mathematical Journey, Sarah Flannery, David Flannery (Contributor)

The math club sponsored a Gambling Day this fall. We had tables with Black Jack (with a professional dealer), Keno, Nim, and Craps. In addition, we had 2 lectures by statistics professors on the probability of winning in Craps and the mathematics behind various betting schemes in Black Jack. Players received $100 in math club money at the start. Prizes were awarded based on the most dollars accumulated at the end of play.
