Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter activities this year:

Our induction ceremony was fun; we had dinner afterwards at a department member's house. A web site with pictures is up at Longwood.

Several members also joined us for the spring Section MAA meeting at Loyola College in April. Duane Smalley, a graduating senior, competed in the undergraduate poster session.

Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the PME national meeting at MathFest in Knoxville, Tennessee?

Next year's president Brandon Taylor plans to attend MathFest as chapter delegate.

Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences. :

Lindsay Robson will attend Virginia Commonwealth University.

Duane Smalley will attend University of Devner.

Brian Meckstroth will attend William and Mary University.

Grant Report:

This year we applied for a Chapter matching grant to supplement a prize for a problem of the month geared toward undergraduates. We awarded first and second place prizes of $40 and $20 respectively in the form of gift certificates to a local restaurant. First prize went to Dan Dougherty, a Math/CS double major (but not a Pi Mu Epsilon member); second prize went to John Burton, PME chapter president this year.

Surprisingly, student involvement had no discernible increase due to the announcement of an award at the beginning of the spring semester. However, the award did help to promote scholarship across campus. Even though faculty and staff weren't eligible for the award, we received submissions to the problems from them starting in the spring semeseter. We even had several people visit the problem of the month web site who weren't on-campus starting in the spring who submitted answers. To view the web site, please visit: HERE
