Describe the two most interesting or unusual chapter mathematical activities this year:
1) Organized and held our first ever VCU-PME student conference. 2) We held a series of Python seminars.
Do any of your chapter members plan to attend or present a paper at the 2012 PME national meeting at MathFest in Madison, Wisconsin?
No
Do you have any news about current students or recent graduates? For example, scholarships or other awards, acceptances to graduate school, paper presentations at conferences.
GRADUATE SCHOOL: Corey Colbert- University of Texas, PhD, with a fellowship Patrick Gaskill- VCU, masters, with a Graduate Teaching Assistantship Racheal Cooper- VCU, PhD, with a Doctoral Assistantship T. Ian Martiny- University of Pittsburgh, PhD, with a Teaching Assistantship Richard Garrett- Resselaer Polytechnic Institute, with a teaching Assistantship PRESENTATIONS: Racheal Cooper- Poster presentation at Society of Mathematical Biology Annual meeting July 2012.
If you were awarded a PME Lectureship, Conference, or Prize Grant within the past year, please briefly describe the results.
Our conference was very successful. We had over 40 attendees with 10 student speakers and 2 plenary speakers (Bard Ermentrout, University of Pittsburgh, Mathematical Biology and Michael Hill, University of Virginia, Algebra). VCU students and faculty from mathematics and engineering, but we did have some students from three other universities. Hopefully, next year we can expand this conference to include more of the surround universities and Pi Mu Epsilon chapters. We received a lot of positive feedback from the attendees and we believe many will return next year.
