Pi Mu Epsilon Journal

Problem Department

Steven J. Miller

The Problem Department appears in each issue of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal. The editor welcomes problems believed to be new and at a level appropriate for the readers of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal. Old problems displaying novel and elegant methods of solution are also invited. Proposals should be accompanied by solutions if available and by any information that will assist the editor. An asterisk (*) preceding a problem number indicates that the proposer did not submit a solution.

Beginning in 2006 the problems will be posted on this website in advance of the publication of the Journal. It is the plan that for future issues the problems for the next issue will be posted on our web site the day after the deadline for submission of solutions to the previous issue. We hope this will spark additional interest in these very good problems. Only the problems will be posted. The solutions and names of solvers will continue to be published only in the Journal.

Solutions and new problems should be emailed to the Problem Section Editor, Steven J. Miller. Proposers of new problems are strongly encouraged to use LaTeX. Please submit each proposal and solution preferably typed or clearly written on a separate sheet, properly identified with your name, affiliation, and email address, and if it is a solution clearly state the problem number. Solutions to problems in the current issue must be received by March 1, 2014. Solutions identified as by students are given preference.
